Steiff

The very first Steiff was a little elephant. Margarete Steiff sewed it from felt in 1880 as a pincushion, and it wasn’t long before the children in her village claimed it to play with. From that little elephant grew a German family business that still operates today according to her conviction: for children, only the best is good enough. In 1902, her nephew Richard designed the first plush bear with movable arms and legs, thus introducing the teddy bear to the world.

Bears, wild animals, and a whole farm

The Steiff teddy bears are the classics, from a small brown bear to a collector's item in mohair. In addition, Steiff creates an entire zoo: the soft Soft Cuddly Friends that fit perfectly in small hands, wild animals from elephants to polar bears, dogs and cats that look suspiciously like the real thing, and baby plush toys with rattles or comforters, popular as a newborn gift that lasts.

Button in the ear

Since 1904, every plush toy has worn the Knopf im Ohr, the small metal button that has stood for verified Steiff quality for over 120 years. You can feel it in the fabric, mohair and alpaca for the finest pieces, and in the details of the snout, paws, and eyes. These plush toys are made to last for generations, which explains why adults are just as happy to receive them as children: the collector's items are released in limited editions, often with a certificate.
