Which water bottle or lunchbox doesn't leak?

Nothing is more annoying than a leaky water bottle or lunchbox, right? Fortunately, this blog is here to help you out and give you tips.

The most leak-proof choice is a water bottle with a full screw-top system and a lunchbox with separate, well-sealing compartments. Also, look for a closure that your child can open themselves, but which remains securely closed at the bottom of their school bag. Stainless steel lasts the longest and also keeps drinks cool for hours.

Why does a water bottle or lunchbox leak?

Usually, it's due to the closure. A cheerful flap or a pop-up spout is convenient at the table, but is more likely to give way when the bottle is on its side in a full school bag. With lunchboxes, it's often the lid that doesn't seal all the way around, allowing a wet slice of cucumber or a delicious yogurt to make its way to the notebooks.

The solution isn't complicated: choose a system that truly seals, and teach your child to place the bottle upright in the bag. That saves a lot of soggy sandwiches.

Which water bottle doesn't leak?

A bottle with a screw cap that you tighten completely is the safest choice for a school bag. Such a cap seals all around, whereas a flap or spout always carries a small risk. If you still want a spout for on the go, choose one with a click-lock that closes over it.

Preferably choose stainless steel. Such a bottle is sturdy, doesn't impart any taste, and keeps water or juice fresh for an entire school day. The insulated bottles from 24Bottles are a great example of this: leak-proof, lightweight, and made to last for years instead of just one school year.

Which lunchbox doesn't leak?

For a lunchbox, it's all about separate compartments that each seal well, following the bento principle. Wet and dry stay separated, and nothing leaks from one compartment to another. A lid that clicks all around or closes with a sturdy clamp keeps everything in place, even if the box ends up upside down.

Also, make sure the box fits in the school bag next to the bottle, and that your child can open and close it themselves. A lunchbox that only mom or dad can open will likely come back unopened after school or a day at camp.

What else should you look for for children?

A few things make a daily difference:

  • Choose a closure that small hands can operate themselves, but which is sturdy enough to stay closed in the bag.
  • Go for material that can withstand a knock and is easy to clean. A wide opening and as few corners as possible where dirt can accumulate will save you a lot of washing up in the evening.
  • A size that matches the age and hunger/thirst of your child. For a toddler, a smaller 300ml water bottle is sufficient; an older school-aged child drinks more easily, so it's best to give them a larger water bottle.
  • Materials without nasty substances are most popular with everyone, such as stainless steel and food-grade plastic.

This is precisely what we at In den Olifant base our collection selection on. We pay attention to what goes out daily, stays closed, and is easy to clean, so you don't have to think about it anymore.
