In the 1960s, supercars were voluptuous, hammered aluminum shells, with supermodel curves, organic shapes that looked as if carved from marble. But in Italy, a new generation of designers spent hours working on radical new ideas that seemed to come straight from the future.
Thus began the era of the otherworldly concept cars of the 1970s, which were essentially wedges on wheels, all corners and edges with skins stretched between them. Roof heights were lowered to windowsill level, you practically sat on the floor, the windshield and hood sharing the same flat surface. Always with a V12 that felt like it was screaming right behind your head.
Many of these concepts are forgotten by most people, but one became the poster on every boy's wall in the '80s. It's hard to overstate the influence these cars have had on popular culture, not only in their exteriors but also in sci-fi movies, fighter jets, speedboats, and many other recognizable forms in our lives. UFO is a tribute to big dreams and radical change.
